It's A Film Thing Presents: An Interview with Gabriel Constans, screenwriter of the film – The Last Conception
Bio: Author, screenwriter and parent.
Teacher of mindfulness, body and mental health. Writer, journalist and ukulele
lover.
Deliah
Lawrence: Describe your journey of becoming a screenwriter?
Gabriel
Constans: It has been an interesting process and journey to move from
having my book published, then writing the script and finding producers
interested in making the film. Time wise, it took a total of about two years
for that process, and two years before that to write the story and find a
publisher.
DL: Did you
encounter any challenges with getting this movie from concept to the screen?
GC: Since the story is quite unique it involved a lot of approaches to a variety of producers until I happened upon just the right people (Gabriela Ledesma & Callie Schuttera) at Poison Pictures. They understood it and made some great changes to the script, eventually turning it from a drama into a romantic comedy or dramedy.
DL: What tips would you give to someone hoping to get into the world of filmmaking?
GC: Learn to live with rejection
(similar as an author). Take criticism with a grain of salt, but be open to
seeing your story from a different view or where it could be stronger. Most
importantly, in my experience, be persistent. I have other scripts I’ve been
working on and trying to get produced for a number of years and stay with it no
matter how many times they’ve been declined.
DL: Can you tell us about your film and how the actors were selected?
GC: The Sikand family learns that their only hope of continuing their “ancient bloodline” is their skeptical gay daughter Savarna. It is about learning to respect others and one’s self and what “makes a family.” The actresses and actors all auditioned for their parts and were selected by the producers.
DL: What is one thing you hope viewers will take away from the film?
GC: I hope viewers will find the film to be uplifting, humorous, thoughtful, well-done and provide some new perspectives on culture, family, respect, children, parents and identifying what is most important for themselves.
DL: Where is the film available and how can viewers support you?
GC: The film is available in the US and Canada on AmazonPrime, Amazon, YouTube, Fandango, iTunes, Vudu, Rogers (in Canada), GooglePlay, IMDB, and Vimeo. Viewers can watch and leave a review. The more positive reviews on AmazonPrime, the greater chance we may also have the movie picked up by Netflix and/or Hulu.
DL: What new projects are you currently working on?
GC: Am presently working on a number of other scripts. One, Buddha’s Wife, won Best Screenplay at the FLOW Film Festival, has obtained international distribution, and a director attached (Shondra MacDonald at Kiss the Limit Productions). It is based on my novel of the same name, but set in a contemporary setting. We are looking for investors, filmmakers and producers who would like to invest in this story. Am also continuing to approach producers for other scripts, three of them my stories and one of them based on another author’s story. Also spending a lot of time publicizing The Last Conception.
DL: Where
can folks connect with you?
