So I took a break from reading romantic suspense novels and dived into a contemporary romance novel by Marie Johnston. I enjoyed the storyline and couldn’t wait to see how love conquered all.
Let’s meet Kendall Brinkley, a twenty-eight- year-old divorcee, jobless, and forced to move back home with her parents and her four younger siblings. She gets the opportunity to interview for an executive assistant position at a tech company owned by Beckett King in Denver courtesy of his grandmother Emilia Boyd. Little did Kendall know she would be traveling via private plane with Gentry King, Beckett’s father and CEO of King Oil who had to make a stop in Wyoming before she gets to Denver. As luck would have it, there was a major snow storm and they were stuck in Douglas, Wyoming. With all the hotels in town full to capacity, they found one hotel with only one room with one bed available.
While stuck in the room together the attraction intensified between Kendall and Gentry although there was a twenty-year age gap. Their conversations and sharing of personal information about their families, loves/lovers, and playing card games over a few days drew them closer. When Gentry told Kendall the only reason she was flying to Denver to interview with Beckett was because Emilia wanted her to marry Beckett. This ruse was because there was a trust fund set up by Gentry’s wife before she passed for their four sons that would go away if they didn’t marry at a certain age. This didn’t sit well with Kendall and she opted not to pursue the job until one was created for her by Gentry. This of course created problems with Emilia and Beckett who saw Kendall as a gold digger.
Overall, I loved the storyline which shows that mutual attraction despite such a wide age gap can develop into love. The author did a great job showing how Gentry differed from Kendall’s ex-husband who didn’t understand her need to be there for her siblings. They had a lot in common and I loved the mutual respect and trust they developed for each other. And despite a few hiccups along the way (Kendall quitting her job at King Oil, not being trusted by Beckett and Emilia) there was a happy ending. Oh and let’s not forget those steamy sex scenes!
Two thumbs up for this sexy read! I would definitely read more from this author.
Some of my
favorite lines:
The
task coming up was nearly as daunting as the firing had been. Back in the vehicle,
Kendall expectably watched me. I kicked the vehicle into gear. “There’s one
room open at a hotel downtown.”
“One
room?” Her voice had gone high. She cleared her throat. “Only one?”
“She
called everywhere. It’s our only option.”
“Oh.
Okay.”
Yeah. She sounded about how I felt. Shell-shocked and full of dread. I had spent the night with plenty of strangers, but never with a woman I wasn’t having sex with. And Ms. Brinkley was off-limits.
