Author’s Bio: Reese Spenser’s lifelong goal was to be a writer. Born in South Carolina, she relocated with her family to Washington D.C. as a young child and from the age of fourteen began actively journaling and writing short stories. During her career in customer service, her dream of writing continued. Her dream became reality the Spring of 2016, when she decided to become a full-time writer. Her first book project is a three-book romance series called The Bonded Series.
She is now a self-published romance author of four romance novels, a member of the Maryland Writers’ Association and a small business owner. Her desire to find ways to reach more readers led her to create Happy Endings Book Box, a quarterly romance subscription box. Her goal is to introduce romance readers to not just her novels, but also other lesser-known indie romance authors.
Deliah Lawrence: Describe your writing process?
Reese Spenser: I consider myself a plantser, so I outline a little to develop the plot and the characters. But I also love the organic flow that occurs once I get to know my characters and allow them to influence the story.
DL: What do
you think makes a good story?
RS: I believe a good story allows you see through the character’s eyes, feel what they feel, cry when they cry and laugh when they laugh.
DL: Is there
any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up
or as an adult?
RS: I read Irish Thoroughbred by Nora Roberts and fell in love with the idea of romance novels. I was 14 when Ms. Roberts inspired my first attempt at writing a romance novel.
DL: If you
could choose a superpower what would it be and why?
RS: lf I could choose a superpower it would be the power to replicate myself. There never seems to be enough time in a day for me to accomplish all my goals and my to do list keeps growing.
DL: What tips
would you give to aspiring writers?
RS: I would advise aspiring writers to schedule time to write. You must actually write to become a writer. Join a writer’s group like the Maryland Writers’ Association. The resources they offer will help to hone your writing. Try to surround yourself with like-minded creative people, aspiring and professional.
DL: What do
you like to do when you are not writing?
RS: When I’m not busy writing, I enjoy reading, watching Marvel action movies with my husband of twenty-plus years and spoiling my grandchildren.
DL: What are
three things you can’t live without?
RS: The
three things I can’t live without are my iPhone, lip balm and romance novels.
DL: If you
had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
RS: The
three words I would use to describe myself are, a determined introvert.
DL: What new
projects are you currently working on?
RS: I’m currently working on two novels simultaneously. Always Meant to Be and Tempted by the Devil.
