National Poetry Month’s Feature: Poet Wendye Savage

Poet’s Bio:  The author, poet, mental health advocate and certified life coach, Wendye Savage began writing poetry in elementary school.  Wendye’s aunt quickly noticed her gift and entered her into poetry contests in their church, where Wendye always won first prize.

While isolated when caring for her bedridden mother, without positive friends or a driver’s license, Wendye, challenged with major depression, began to use her gift of writing to pen a weekly poetry for her town’s local newspaper.  Reluctant at first, she began to pen pieces about depression. Wendye knew that there were other people who were challenged with mental illness, so she went forward in sharing her poetry. Wendye was considered an asset to the newspaper and had a huge following. As she learned that she was helping others, she became more transparent and was delivered from major depression.

Wendye is the author of two inspiring collections of poetry, entitled, One Sweet Day, and After the Rain.  She is also the author of a women’s wellness guide, entitled, What’s in Your Purse? where she’s added a splash of poetry throughout its pages. Above all else, Wendye is a woman of God and an over comer striving to become better than she was yesterday.

Deliah Lawrence: Do you have any reflections about life in general?

Wendye Savage: Sure, I’m a firm believer in moving forward. We are not defined by our past mistakes. We are not defined by what others think about us or what anybody has said. We are responsible for owning our stuff and standing in our truth.

DL: In celebration of National Poetry Month, can you share with us a few of your poems?

WS: I’d be happy to. Here you go:

Excerpt from One Sweet Day: “SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL”

Tucked away in fantasy

Somewhere in my dreams;

Lies a vision of your eyes

Peering into mine so passionately.

With the depth of the rivers

Like the sun’s warmth to behold;

And a love so filled with rapture

Until I shiver to my soul.

Feeling safe just like a loved child

Bubbling with glee;

There’s a vision of your eyes

Somewhere in my dreams.

Excerpt from What’s in Your Purse? A Guide for Women’s Wellness: “THE CROWN”

Glowing from within itself

This radiant beam of light;

Created and designed by

The personal triumphs of life.

Created in the fire

Tested in its flames;

From within a woman’s heart

Purpose pushes from her pain.

You wonder how she gets back up

After being knocked down to the ground;

Well, God is walking with her

And His power is in her crown.

If her tiara slips and falls

Grace shall be found;

Fore God is walking with her

And His power is in her crown.

DL: Where can folks learn more about you and your poetry?

WS: They can find out more here:

DL: It’s been a pleasure having you here with us today. I know my readers will enjoy reading your poetry.
