The title of this book piqued my interest because I wanted to know how fixed the characters were on each other. Laurelin Paige didn’t disappoint as she weaved a story about lust, love, and complicated emotions brought about by an indecent proposal.
So, let’s dive into the storyline. Alayna Withers is a bartender at The Sky Launch, a nightclub in New York. She just recently earned her MBA and wants to get a promotion as a manager at the club. On one of her shifts, she meets a ruggedly handsome and rich stranger who immediately sets her insides on fire. Unbeknownst to her, this stranger – Hudson Pierce was the new owner of the club.
Things get complicated when Hudson proposes an arrangement that would blur the lines between Alayna being his fake girlfriend in public and his lover behind his bedroom doors. These two characters had enough flaws and secrets that made for a very complicated relationship. Alayna – easily fixated and obsessed in the past on the wrong men that garnered her a restraining order and Hudson – his manipulative and domineering ways broke women’s hearts. Nevertheless, the chemistry between them was palpable.
Overall, the characters were well written although at times they were somewhat overbearing. Alayna cried a bit too much and was whiny. She knew what she was getting into once she agreed to Hudson’s proposal but she didn’t bank on his mother, Sophia, being such an unrelenting foe or that she would fall so hard for him. Hudson, on the other hand, was very domineering and at times mean in the way he talked to Alayna especially in the beginning. However, when they connected sexually all the angst subsided. Nevertheless, the author did a great job showing the readers why the characters acted the way they acted by exposing their fears, their anxieties, and their need to love and be loved.
I would definitely read another novel by this author! Two thumbs up!
Some of my favorite lines:
“This
wouldn’t affect your employment at the club.” He removed his arm from the couch
and sat forward. “Maybe hire is not the correct term. I’d like to pay you to
help me with a problem. I believe you’d be perfect for the job.”
The
whole conversation had my head spinning, but he had my attention. “You win. My
curiosity is piqued. What’s the job?”
“I
need you to break up an engagement.”
I
coughed, wondering if I heard him correctly, knowing I had. “Um, what? Whose?”
Hudson
leaned back, his dazzling gray eyes flickering in the strobe lights. “Mine.”
